Olean Firefighter Recruits Complete 14-Week Academy

A class of City of Olean firefighter recruits completed the final phase of a 14-week training academy on August 27, preparing the candidates to enter the department's career ranks.During the final two weeks, recruits received instruction in code enforcement, commercial building familiarization, live-fire operations, vehicle extrication, fire investigation and vehicle fire suppression.The Cattaraugus County, New York, recruits also completed a 24-hour shift that included fireground evolutions under nighttime and limited-visibility conditions. The exercise was designed to provide experience with the extended operations and working conditions encountered by career firefighters.Completion of the training marked the final stage of the academy ahead of the recruits' formal graduation and entry into service.
