NORTHAMPTON, MA — August 18, 2026 — During a training exercise centered on rope-guided search procedures and communication, Northampton Fire Rescue members practiced search principles.

Firefighters performed a rope-guided search without the use of a thermal imaging camera (TIC) during the August 18 training. Additionally, their eyesight was purposefully obscured, thus in order to finish the exercise, crews had to rely on established search methods, rope management, and communication.

The purpose of the training was to reaffirm skills that firefighters might require in situations where vision is poor and there is no access to technology or visual aids. Disciplined search procedures and crew communication are crucial backup abilities since thermal imaging cameras can provide firefighters more information in low-visibility situations.

With their sight removed, firefighters had to maintain awareness of the search rope, communicate with other members of the team and use systematic search methods to locate and complete the simulated rescue.

Rope-guided searches can provide a reference point for crews operating in environments where visibility is restricted. The exercise also placed emphasis on rope control and maintaining effective communication throughout the search.
