FOSTER, RI — AUGUST 18 — The Foster Center Volunteer Fire Company honored its members on August 18 as part of National Volunteer Firefighters Recognition Day, celebrating the firefighters who dedicated their time to emergency response, training, and community service.

This annual event took place on August 18 and was established by federal law in 1984.

President Ronald Reagan officially declared the first National Volunteer Firefighters Recognition Day that same year.

The Foster Center Volunteer Fire Company was based at 86 Foster Center Road and was one of three volunteer fire departments serving the Town of Foster.

According to town planning documents, the three companies operated separately but worked together to provide fire protection services.

The department's volunteers were involved in responding to various emergencies, including fires, motor vehicle accidents, wildland incidents, water and ice rescues, and other calls for assistance.

They also engaged in regular training sessions and community events.

The recognition event emphasized the continuous effort needed to sustain a volunteer emergency service, which includes training, equipment maintenance, fundraising, and emergency response duties.
