KENDALL, NY — September 1 — Members of the Kendall Fire Department carried out driver training across the district, focusing on maneuvering fire apparatus and completing multiple cone course exercises.The training emphasized vehicle control, proper positioning, and operating large fire equipment in tight spaces.

The sessions also addressed the responsibilities of driver/operators once they arrived at an incident.

Firefighters practiced skills such as securing a water supply, positioning at hydrants, operating the pump, and maintaining a steady water flow for attack lines.

Driver/operator training has long been a standard part of fire service operations.

According to NFPA guidelines, firefighters assigned to operate apparatus must complete training suitable for the vehicles they use.This included instruction on safe driving in emergency and non-emergency situations, proper apparatus placement, pump operation, hydrant connections, and water supply procedures.

In addition, the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control provides Apparatus Operator courses that cover emergency vehicle operation, pump functions, hydraulics, fire streams, drafting, and hydrant operations.

The Kendall training offered firefighters hands-on experience with the equipment they use during emergency responses, ensuring they are well-prepared for real-world situations.
