CAZENOVIA, NY — August 23 — The Cazenovia Fire Department conducted pump operations training on August 23, giving members an opportunity to practice apparatus and water-supply skills before being called to assist neighboring firefighters in Smithfield.

The morning training focused on pump operations, an important engine-company skill used to establish and maintain water flow during fireground operations. New York State fire training programs include pump operation, hydraulics, friction loss, pump controls, fire streams and pumping from hydrants among the skills required of apparatus operators.

The department's training also provided members with hands-on practice before the crew transitioned from training to an actual mutual-aid response. Seventeen firefighters answered the call for assistance, according to department-provided information.

Cazenovia Fire Department operates from 121 Albany St. and is a volunteer department serving the village and surrounding portions of Madison County. A recent industry report noted that the department operated a new Sutphen SP95 aerial platform quint and maintained a range of pumping and rescue apparatus.

The August 23 session reinforced pump skills, crew readiness and the ability to move from scheduled training into mutual-aid operations.
