EAST HERKIMER, NY — August 19 — The East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department held hydrant operations training on August 19, allowing members to practice the water-supply techniques used during structure fire incidents.
During the drill, firefighters engaged in hands-on activities at a fire hydrant, working around the hydrant and supply hose while going over the steps required to set up a water supply.
Skills such as connecting the hydrant to the fire engine, deploying the hose, and operating the hydrant are standard firefighter competencies outlined in NFPA 1010.
The training enabled the department members to review their equipment, communication methods, and team coordination in a controlled environment.
The East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department’s training procedures focus on organized training areas, proper positioning of apparatus, emergency access, and the availability of established water sources during departmental operations.
The East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department, based at 193 Main Road, has been serving the community since 1931 and provides fire protection throughout the Town of Herkimer, as well as responding to mutual-aid calls.
