Avon, CT - Avon Volunteer Fire Department members recently conducted a detailed pre-incident walkthrough of a large apartment complex currently under construction at The Homes at Avon Park, providing crews with early familiarity of a significant future response area.

Led by Chief Bruce Appell, firefighters toured the four-story structure, which will ultimately include 100 apartments as part of a broader redevelopment project adding 176 total housing units to the property. The drill focused on understanding how the building is being constructed before it is fully enclosed and ocupied.

During the walkthrough, members identified key operational features including hydrant locations, primary and secondary access points, main entry corridors, stairwell and elevator placement, building layout, trash chute systems, storage areas, and the planned sprinkler protection system.

The training, conducted on 15 August in Hartford County, allowed firefighters to observe the internal framework of the structure while it was still exposed, ofering a rare oportunity to visualize how future interior conditions may present during an emergency response.

By walking the unfinished building, crews were able to develop a mental map of access routes and potential challenges, improving situational awareness for future fireground operations once the complex is occupied.

The evolution reinforced the importance of pre-planning in rapidly developing residential areas, ensuring responders are better prepared to navigate large-scale structures under emergency conditions.
