150 Years in Avon, 100 Years in East Avon

The Avon and East Avon fire departments came together Saturday to celebrate a combined 250 years of service to their communities.

The celebration, held August 22 along Genesee Street, recognized the 150th anniversary of the Avon Fire Department and the 100th anniversary of the East Avon Fire Department.

Residents had an opportunity to view both modern and antique fire apparatus, tour equipment and meet members of the departments. Younger visitors participated in a firefighter scavenger hunt while learning more about the work of local firefighters.

The public portion of the celebration concluded at Pocket Park, where local and state representatives recognized the departments for their longstanding service. Speakers included Avon Mayor Rob Hayes, Supervisor Dave LeFeber, Assemblywoman Andrea Bailey, state Sen. Pam Helming and a representative from Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office. Proclamations and citations marking the departments’ anniversaries were also presented.

Following the community celebration, members of both departments gathered at the East Avon Fire Department for an evening of food, yard games and fellowship.

The departments thanked the Avon Lions Club, Connie for providing ice cream, the Avon Police Department, Lima Volunteer Fire Department and Fire & Feast Catering Co. for their assistance with the celebration.

The milestone provided an opportunity to recognize 250 years of local fire service while honoring both the generations who built the departments and the members who continue serving the Avon and East Avon communities today.
