NEW YORK, NY — August 24, 2026 — At the FDNY EMS Academy at Fort Totten on Monday morning, a new batch of probationary EMTs from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) was sworn in.

In the upcoming months, the new EMTs will finish training that focuses on the operational and medical abilities required to function in the emergency medical system of New York City.

Patient evaluation, CPR, airway management, oxygen treatment, trauma care, emergency childbirth, spinal immobilization, mass-casualty incident operations, and emergency vehicle operations are all included in training at the EMS Academy. Information about FDNY training also covers patient care, communications, scene safety, and department protocols.

FDNY emergency medical workers can get basic and ongoing training at the academy, which is situated in Fort Totten in Bayside, Queens. Additionally, it offers paramedics and EMTs specialized and refresher training.

The training time will help the new probationary EMTs get ready for the challenges of delivering prehospital emergency treatment across New York City. EMTs are deployed to units that serve towns throughout the five boros after completing the necessary training.

In August, the FDNY graduated a previous batch of 124 probationary EMTs who had finished their training at the EMS Academy prior to beginning field assignments.
