HOMER, NY — August 7, 2026 — On Friday nite, Homer Fire Department personnel conducted practical fireground training with an emphasis on water supply and apparatus operations.

Tanker operations, deck gun use aboard 501, and drafting operations with the department's new 511 were all covered in the training. Members became acquainted with the department's equipment and water supply capabilities by working through the various processes.

When a hydrant is unavailable or a large-volume water supply is required, drafting training allows firemen to practice setting up a water supply from a static source. In rural and suburban regions where hydrant coverage may be limited, tanker operations play a significant role in fire response.

The department also worked with the deck gun on Engine 501, giving members an opportunity to operate a large-caliber fixed stream from the apparatus. Training on the equipment allows firefighters to become familiar with its operation before it is needed during an incident.

The Homer Fire Department serves the Village of Homer, Town of Homer and Town of Scott, operating from its station in the Village of Homer. The department dates back to 1873, when Triumph Hose Co. No. 1 was organized. Today, the department consists of Triumph Hose Co. No. 1, Tioughnioga Hose Co. No. 2 and West Side Hose Co. No. 3.
