Kent, CT - In structural firefighting and rapid rescue operations, heavy deadbolts and reinforced security barriers often stand between first responders and individuals in grave danger. Having the technique, leverage, and speed to breach locked entryways without unnecessary delay is a critical capability that requires regular, hands-on practice.

To maintain that operational edge, members of the Kent Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. traveled across Litchfield County on the evening of August 27, 2026, joining forces with their neighbors at the Bantam Fire Company for an in-depth forcible entry drill. The dedicated training session focused on breaking down the physics and mechanics behind conventional and advanced breaching methods.

Under the guidance of instructor Ryan Litwin, who led the evolutions and demonstrated essential techniques, firefighters worked through realistic prop scenarios. Crews practiced sizing up various door-and-frame assemblies, mastering the coordination between the irons—the flathead axe and Halligan bar—and applying effective leverage to overcome stubborn locks quickly and cleanly.

The joint evening underscored the importance of strong inter-departmental collaboration, ensuring that when emergency tones drop, regional crews can gain immediate access to structures and reach those in need when every second counts.
