Eyes in the Sky: Shelton Crews Train with Life Star for Landing Zone Operations in Connecticut

Shelton, CT - The Shelton Fire Department conducted helicopter familiarization training with the Life Star air medical crew, enhancing operational readiness for emergency air medical responses.


The training began with a classroom session focused on helicopter safety, air medical coordination, and the essential procedures required for establishing and securing safe landing zones during emergency operations. Members from the Shelton Fire Department, East Haven Ambulance Corps, and mutual aid partners from Storm Engine Company 2 participated in the instructional portion of the program.


Following the classroom briefing, personnel moved to Veterans Memorial Park, where they observed the Life Star helicopter land and conducted hands-on familiarization around the aircraft. Crews reviewed critical safety zones, approach and exit procedures, communication protocols with flight crews, and proper ground operations required to support safe medevac operations in the field.


The exercise provided responders with practical exposure to helicopter operations, reinforcing safety awareness and coordination between fire, EMS, and air medical teams during high-pressure emergency incidents.


On August 15, 2026, in Fairfield County, Connecticut, members further reinforced landing zone procedures and real-world coordination techniques as the Life Star aircraft completed its demonstration at Veterans Memorial Park.


Members of the public who gathered at the site were also given an opportunity to observe the aircraft and learn about its role in emergency medical response. The department extended its appreciation to the Life Star crew—Justin, Aaron, Lorene, and presenter Jarad—for their instruction and support, highlighting the value of joint training in strengthening regional emergency preparedness and patient care outcomes.
