Cutchogue, N.Y. — July 26 — Members of the Cutchogue Fire Department Fire Police Squad spent Sunday morning at department headquarters reviewing traffic-control and scene-safety skills during a two-hour training session.
The training focused on the role fire police play at emergency scenes, particularly during the busy summer season when increased traffic can create additional challenges for emergency crews working along roadways.
The Cutchogue Fire Police Squad, established in 1930, is responsible for helping protect firefighters, EMS personnel and the public by controlling vehicle and pedestrian traffic around emergency scenes. The unit also helps establish safe working areas so emergency crews can operate without unnecessary exposure to passing traffic.
Highway safety, traffic-control strategies and tactics, and scene safety were among the subjects covered in New York State Fire Police training that were reviewed in class on July 26.
After the classroom section, 17 fire officers went outdoors to mimic a car accident. Members practiced directing traffic, making a diversion around the fictitious disaster scene, putting up their equipment, and interacting with one another.
Firehouse Training Plus+, which has worked with Cutchogue firefighters during prior department training sessions, assisted in conducting the roughly two-hour simulation.
