Following a VHF radio report of a vessel in distress, fire department marine crews and the Moriches Bay Marine Incident Response Team searched the Atlantic Ocean south of Moriches Inlet.
Just before 1:30 p.m. on July 24 in Center Moriches, NY, the MIRT and Center Moriches Fire Department were notified. Marine units operating under the direction of Westhampton Beach Fire Department passed through Moriches Inlet and began checking the area and nearby vessels.
A U.S. Coast Guard Station Shinnecock boat crew also assisted, checking vessels and determining whether anyone required assistance. The response occurred during the July 23-26 Around Long Island Regatta, which brought increased vessel traffic to Long Island waters.
The Moriches Bay MIRT includes firefighters from Center Moriches, East Moriches, Eastport, Mastic, Mastic Beach and Westhampton Beach fire departments and is trained for marine search and rescue, fires, distress calls and EMS incidents.
After approximately 45 minutes of searching, responders determined that no vessel or occupants were in distress. Marine units were released and returned to service without incident. The MIRT continues to work with the U.S. Coast Guard and Suffolk County Police Department Marine Bureau on marine safety and water-rescue operations.
