Olean, N.Y. — July 29 — Hazardous materials response was a key component of the two weeks of special operations training that City of Olean Fire Department trainees underwent. Chemistry, container evaluations, response choices, personal protective equipment, and incident action planning were all included in training for recruits up to the technician level. Additionally, recruits were able to apply classroom skills to simulated occurrences thru scenario-based exercises and analytical tools.

The program's main objectives were to identify hazards, evaluate risks, and choose the best course of action. The training improved the recruits' ability to handle hazardous materials calls and other special operations situations that call for technical expertise, meticulous preparation, and well-coordinated fireground operations.
