Wernersville, PA. — August 4 — In response to a horse rescue at Holy Spirit Farm and Horse Sanctuary, the Western Berks Fire Department was called to the 100 block of Justa Road in Lower Heidelberg Township. Sugar, a 23-year-old rescue horse, struggled to stand for several hours before crews discovered her inside a stall. Before employing more personnel and encouragement to assist Sugar in getting back on her feet, firefighters considered a number of options.
About an hour later, as crews cleared the area, the horse was standing and doing well. The mission of Holy Spirit Farm and Horse Sanctuary was to rescue and care for animals in need. The outcome demonstrated the importance of training for unconventional rescues.
