Westerly, R.I. — July 31 — The Rhode Island Steam Fire Engine Co. No. 1's historic contributions to the establishment of modern firefighting in the city were acknowledged by the Westerly Fire Department, located at 7 Union Street. The firm, which was founded in 1869, improved emergency response capabilities and replaced the need for manually operated equipment by introducing Westerly's first steam-powered fire engine.
The department also emphasized the Gamewell fire alarm system, which was added later and enhanced fire alerts prior to the widespread use of telephones. The department's dedication to fire suppression, public safety, training, and service to the Westerly community is still influenced by the legacy of the Rhode Island Steam Fire Engine Co. No. 1.
