Residents were urged by the East Killingly Fire Department to enjoy Independence Day holiday celebrations with loved ones in a safe manner.

The agency urged people to never relight defective pyrotechnics, to always have water on hand when using legal consumer fireworks, to keep children and pets at a safe distance from fireworks, and to leave fireworks to trained professionals whenever possible. Additionally, homeowners were advised by firefighters to keep grills away from structures and dry plants, drink plenty of water during hot weather, and always use a sober driver when using alcohol.

Residents were warned by the department to dial 911 in case of an emergency.
