The US Coast Guard Cutter Sturgeon, an 87-foot patrol boat of the Marine Protector class that is homeported in Portland and parked at Wright's Wharf on Commercial Street, was visited by Portland Fire Department personnel on June 24.

Firefighters met with Coast Guard personnel to learn about the ship's capabilities, crew operations, and onboard emergency protocols, according to officials. Coordinated response plans and the Portland Fire Department's participation in the event of a shipboard fire or other marine disaster were also discussed during the visit.

According to department officials, the training improved readiness for accidents along the city's coastline while fortifying the relationship between the Portland Fire Department and US Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. Officials expressed gratitude to the Sturgeon crew for sharing and hosting the tour.
