Peru, N.Y. — June 8 — Brian Westover, a member of the Peru Fire Department, finished a year-long fellowship focused on enhancing first responder mental health services. Along with 19 other fellows, Westover participated in a program that met on a regular basis throughout the year to identify the difficulties faced by emergency responders and provide useful tools for support. To help firemen, EMS workers, and other responders better understand and access mental health options, the group created a resource toolbox and manual.

As agencies strive to address stress, burnout, and the demands of public safety job, mental wellbeing has gained more attention in the emergency services sector. According to department officials, the fellowship is a significant step in raising awareness, lowering stigma, and guaranteeing that responders have access to tools that promote their long-term preparedness and well-being.
