Split-Lay Tactics Highlight Second Night of Training

Members of the Bergen Fire Department performed the second night of a water supply training program on May 18th, using realistic field settings to practice firefighting techniques.

Crews trained at sites on Dublin Road and Appletree Road, according to officials, with an emphasis on setting up dependable water sources during mock structure fires. Hydrant operations, tanker support, and split-lay operations—a method that maximizes efficiency by deploying hose lines between a fire location and a water source—were all practiced by firefighters.

Despite high temperatures, crews successfully secured water supplies within minutes at both training sites. Department leaders noted that water supply operations are one of the most important aspects of firefighting, ensuring crews have the resources needed to support fire attack operations. Officials said the exercise strengthened communication, coordination, and operational readiness while preparing firefighters for real-world emergency incidents.
