Bar Harbor Firefighters Sharpen Vehicle Extrication Skills

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Members of the Bar Harbor Fire Department trained in car extrication during the final week of May in order to improve the rescue techniques utilized in major auto accidents.

According to officials, firemen trained dismantling cars in order to safely and effectively free trapped individuals. The unusual chore of disassembling a former department utility vehicle was part of the hands-on training, giving troops a practical chance to practice using rescue instruments and tactics.

The department's extrication skills have been greatly improved by recent improvements, according to department commanders. The "Jaws of Life," which are battery-operated hydraulic cutting and spreading tools, and stabilization struts, which are used to anchor vehicles in unstable locations, are examples of new technology.
