The Town of Dover, New Jersey is located in western Morris County about 31 miles west of New York City. Dover is a bustling town with a busy downtown area and is home to a New Jersey transit railyard, numerous small industrial complexes, commercial merchantile stores, and many single and multiple family dwellings. Dover is 2.73 square miles in area and according to a recent census has approximately 20,000 residents. New Jersey State Highway 46 and the New Jersey Transit Morris and Essex Rail line also run through Dover bringing many commuters and traffic to the area.
The Dover Fire Department was formed in 1847 as a volunteer fire department with several companies. Today the department is a combination department of 17 Career Uniformed fire fighters and 21 volunteer firefighters. The department operates four pieces of apparatus, one engine, one rescue-pumper, a mid-mount quint aerial ladder and a basic life support ambulance. The career staff are all trained firefighter/EMT’s and are supplemented by volunteer staff. The uniformed division also is in charge of the fire prevention bureau and conduct fire inspections in the town.
In 2023, the department responded to about 3,150 calls for service with most being emergency medical calls. The department is also contracted to provide fire and ambulance service to the small neighboring community of Victory Gardens. Morris County Communications provide dispatching for the fire department.
