Training Focus: Disoriented Firefighter Survival

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Richmond Hill, GA - Richmond Hill Fire Department crews conducted training focused on disoriented firefighter scenarios.

Firefighters can become lost or trapped during structure fires, especially in zero-visibility conditions, making disorientation one of the leading causes of line-of-duty injuries and fatalities. When separated from their crew, firefighters must rely on training, touch, and sound to navigate and escape hazardous environments.

Crews practiced critical skills including calling a Mayday, utilizing thermal imaging cameras (TICs), coordinating ventilation, and identifying hose couplings. Understanding hose coupling direction allows firefighters to determine the path to the pump or back toward the fire, a vital skill in low-visibility situations.
