AVALON, NJ — 4th May — Every week, the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department held a training exercise inside a purchased building on 59th Street that was going to be demolished. In order to open roof surfaces during structure fires, firefighters performed various ventilation procedures and concentrated on roof operations. The structure had a flat tar roof part, which gave workers experience with a roof style that is less typical in the Avalon region.
Hose line advancement, fire assault, search and rescue, and VEIS operations were all covered in previous training sessions held at the same site. Before buildings are demolished, firefighters can practice in realistic environments using acquired structures. According to department authorities, the land was given by the family of a departed exempt member in recognition of his many years of service.
