Fair Lawn, NJ - The Fair Lawn Fire Department continues to invest in the development of its newest members, emphasizing that becoming a firefighter requires ongoing training, dedication, and hands-on experience.

Recruits regularly attend classes at the Bergen County Fire Academy twice a week, but their training doesn’t stop there.

The department supplements this with in-house drills designed to reinforce critical skills and build confidence.

During a recent new member training session, recruits practiced stretching hose lines into the smoke house, a physically demanding evolution that highlights the importance of teamwork, coordination, and clear communication under pressure.

Additional training focused on SCBA operations, where members learned how to efficiently change out air cylinders—an essential skill that allows them to safely and effectively contribute on the fireground.

Department officials stress that training is a continuous process, with firefighters constantly honing their skills throughout their careers.
