Mastic FD Explorers Hold Live Fire Extinguisher Training

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

MASTIC, NY - On May 3rd, the Mastic FD held an Explorers meeting and live fire drill at the firehouse. Ex-Chief of Department & Commissioner Rudy Sunderman, Jr. was asked to teach the explorers operation of fire extinguishers. Sunderman began the training by going over the different types of fire extinguishers and what types of fires they are used to put out. He also showed the Explorers how to correctly use an extinguisher via the PASS method (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep).

Once the Explorers were briefed by Chief Sunderman and familiar with the operation of the extinguishers they were split into 2 groups so that they could practice the skills and use the fire extinguisher to put out the fires that were built for this drill in the training field. The groups were supervised by Chief Sunderman and Explorer Advisor’s Firefighter Don Edwards and Captain Rudy Sunderman. An engine crew was also on standby in case they needed to extinguish the fire. The hands-on portion of the drill lasted about an hour and a debriefing followed.
