The New Britain Fire Department reminded people of the risks associated with illegally disposed of smoking products and how they contribute to avoidable fires.
Cigars, cigarettes, and ashes can start fires in houses, outdoor spaces, and trash cans if they are not completely destroyed, according to officials. Common hazards include tossing smoking materials into mulch or dry grass, disposing of them in trash containers, or smoking near combustible materials.
Residents are urged to use proper receptacles, keep smoking materials away from flammable surfaces, and ensure items are fully extinguished before disposal.
