Captain Matt Cray's retirement after 28½ years of service was acknowledged by Hampton Fire/Rescue in April. After becoming a paramedic in September 1997, he was assigned to Group 4 for 22 years before becoming a lieutenant on Group 1 and then returning as captain. In addition, Cray sponsored initiatives like the Toy Bank while serving as treasurer of the Hampton Firefighters & Fire Officers. Throughout his career, he got numerous commendations and unit accolades, including a recent rescue that earned him recognition at the state level. Decades of leadership, service, and dedication to the department and community are reflected in his retirement.
