EATON’S NECK, NY — April 20th — As part of a community service initiative, junior firemen from the Eaton's Neck Fire Department helped clean up the historic Gardiner Family Cemetery on Cherrylawn Lane.
The Gardiner family was among the first landowners of the Eaton's Neck peninsula, and their lengthy history is reflected in the cemetery, which was established in the early 1800s. According to fire officials, the location is a significant reminder of the region's past, particularly the part played by John Gardiner, who sold property to build a lighthouse and assisted in directing ships down the coast.
Robert Hughes, a town of Huntington historian, was present at the cleanup and gave the younger members historical context. Harold Rowan also contributed to the project's coordination.
