Selkirk Firefighters Train for Trail Rescues

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

The Selkirk Fire Department held training on April 17, 2026, with an emphasis on rescuing injured patients from woodland trail areas as the use of trails increases due to warmer weather.

On a route off Rupert Road, firefighters performed many evolutions with two fictitious victims. In order to remove patients over difficult terrain more safely and effectively, crews used a recently purchased rescue wheel that was fastened to a Stokes basket.

In order to simulate extended access issues, a second crew used a UTV to reach another victim more than a mile down the route while one team carried out carry-out operations.

According to officials, the training promotes safe, well-coordinated rescue operations and helps prepare teams for off-road incidents that frequently occur during the busiest outdoor seasons.
