Biddeford, ME — March 23rd — Firefighter Truman Goldwaith passed away on March 23, 1944, while responding to a fire in the Biddeford Pool area. The Biddeford Fire Department acknowledged his line-of-duty death. Back then, Biddeford Pool's fire safety depended on a hose reel wagon towed behind a pickup truck during emergencies. Frequently, the hose reel trailed behind the firefighters in the vehicle. Firefighter Goldwaith was hit by the hose reel cart after falling off the car during the reaction.

The Emond Funeral Home ambulance took him to Webber Hospital, which subsequently served as the model for Maine Medical Center Biddeford. Goldwaith, a firefighter, passed away from his wounds.
