March 19, 2026 — The Pittsfield Fire Department I.A.F.F. Local 2647 conducted specialized surface ice rescue training in preparation for changing seasonal conditions and increased risks associated with thinning ice. As warmer temperatures approach, crews trained on techniques designed to safely reach and rescue individuals who may fall through unstable ice. Firefighters utilized specialized equipment including cold water immersion suits, rescue boards, tether lines, and inflatable rafts to simulate real-world rescue scenarios on frozen waterways. Officials emphasized that ice conditions can rapidly deteriorate during late winter and early spring, making all ice inherently unsafe. The department is reminding residents to exercise extreme caution around frozen bodies of water and to always wear a personal flotation device when near or on the ice. The training ensures responders remain prepared to act quickly and effectively during these high-risk incidents while reinforcing public safety awareness.
