Veteran Firefighter Gary Leighton Passes Away After 34 Years of Service

Rockland, ME - The Rockport Fire Department has announced, with deep sorrow, the passing of Gary Leighton, a devoted public servant who dedicated over three decades to the community.


Leighton began his service with the department in 1971 and quickly rose through the ranks. He served as Lieutenant of Engine 21 from 1972 to 1982, followed by his roles as Assistant Chief from 1982 to 1984 and Deputy Chief from 1984 to 1991. After his leadership tenure, he returned to active duty as a firefighter, continuing to serve until his retirement in 2005.


The department honors and remembers Gary Leighton for his 34 years of unwavering commitment and service to the Town of Rockport.
