Paul Smiths-Gabriels Fire Department Recruiting Volunteers

The Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department is urging community residents to consider joining the volunteer fire service as it seeks to increase membership.


According to officials, volunteer firefighter numbers are falling throughout New York State and the Adirondack region. The department is looking for those who want to serve their community while also learning new skills.


Opportunities include interior and outdoor firefighting, EMS support, apparatus driving and pumping, ice and water rescue, fundraising, and station operations.


The department accepts volunteers of all ages. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, or 14 with parental permission, to participate as junior members.


Anyone interested can pick up an application from the firehouse after 6 p.m. on Mondays.
