March 18, 2026 — The Alton Fire Rescue Department responded to a reported structure fire at 100 Old Wolfeboro Road in Alton, where crews encountered heavy fire conditions involving a large three-bay detached garage. Dispatched at approximately 3:43 p.m., firefighters observed a significant column of smoke visible from Route 28 and Mt. Major Highway, with initial reports from the Alton Police Department confirming an active fire. Due to the intensity of the blaze, a second alarm was requested, bringing additional resources to the scene. With personnel already committed to other medical calls, arriving crews quickly transitioned to defensive operations upon confirming heavy fire throughout the structure. Officials reported that no occupants or animals were inside at the time of the incident, and no injuries occurred. Firefighters brought the fire under control within approximately one hour and remained on scene for overhaul and hotspot suppression until about 6:15 p.m. Multiple mutual aid departments assisted in firefighting efforts, while station coverage was maintained by neighboring agencies. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and officials are asking anyone with information to contact Fire Chief James Reinert or Deputy Chief Evan Turcotte.
