Canajoharie, NY — March 8th — Canajoharie Vol Fire Department honored International Women's Day by showcasing the contributions made by women to the fire service and local department operations. Molly Williams, who worked with Oceanus Engine Company No. 11 in New York City in the early 1800s, is among the first women firemen in American history. During a severe snowstorm, she assisted in pulling a hand-drawn fire engine to a call, according to historical archives.
Women are still employed by the fire department today in a variety of capacities, including leadership, training, emergency medical services, and firefighting. The agency appreciates the devotion and hard work of women who continue to support community service and emergency response, according to officials.
