March 20, 2026 — Members of the Gilsum Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad recently conducted hands-on training focused on drafting and water supply operations, essential skills for rural firefighting where hydrants may not be readily available.

During the session, firefighters practiced setting up portable water tanks and utilizing drafting equipment to establish a reliable water source from apparatus. Crews worked through pump operations, hose placement, and coordination between members to ensure efficient water movement during emergency incidents.

Despite colder conditions, which posed challenges such as freezing equipment and water, participants remained committed to sharpening their skills. Department officials noted plans to conduct additional training in warmer weather, allowing crews to flow larger volumes of water and expand on the techniques practiced.

Training evolutions like this play a critical role in maintaining readiness, ensuring firefighters are prepared to deliver effective water supply operations in real-world emergencies.
