SYRACUSE, NY — February 16th — During Black History Month, the Syracuse Fire Department honored Arajean "AJ" Smith for his more than 40 years of service to the city. In 1985, Smith started working for the city, and in 1995, he joined the fire department. As the Chief of Fire's secretary, she currently supports day-to-day operations and helps with departmental administrative coordination. In public safety organizations, administrative personnel are crucial because they assist emergency response activities by managing scheduling, communications, and records.

Smith's behind-the-scenes efforts have kept the department efficient and well-organized. During Black History Month, departments nationwide frequently honor both civilian and uniformed personnel for their accomplishments to public safety and their local communities.
