Geneva Firefighters Provide Safety at YMCA Polar Plunge

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

GENEVA, NY — February 22nd — During the YMCA Polar Plunge, which was a part of the Geneva Winter Festival, firefighters from the City of Geneva Fire Department helped with safety operations. During the event, members were present to keep an eye on the situation and assist in making sure attendees entered and exited the frigid water safely. Fire stations frequently offer backup support at winter water activities since exposure to cold water can quickly cause hypothermia.

Additionally, the department acknowledged the Geneva Firematics and the Geneva community for contributing to the purchase of four new ice and cold-water rescue suits. Firefighters who have finished training in ice and cold-water rescue procedures can use the equipment. The additional equipment helps the department's capacity to manage water-related incidents across the community and increases responder safety.
