The Bolivar Fire Department honored veteran volunteer Stan "Coot" Button as part of its "Who Are Our Volunteers" series, which recognizes people who serve the community.
Button joined the department on September 3rd, 2015, after transferring from the Richburg Fire Company, where he had previously worked for seven years with family members who also work in the fire service. During his stay there, he won Rookie of the Year in his first year and Firefighter of the Year in his second.
Button completed numerous trainings during his 18-year career in the fire service, including Firefighter I, Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC), Scene Support Operations, Conducting Live Fire Training, Emergency Escape System, Electric Vehicle Safety, Wildland Search and Rescue, Mercy Flight Ground Crew Safety, and Fire Officer I. These credentials qualified him to work as an interior and exterior firefighter, truck driver, pump operator, and fire officer, including positions as lieutenant and captain.
Button has previously worked as an assistant junior advisor and adviser for the department's junior firefighter program. He later became vice president and now serves as president of the department, a position he has held for the past three years following the retirement of former president David "Poppy" Thompson.
Button is president of the Allegany County Volunteer Firemen's Association and sergeant at arms for the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firemen in addition to his position with the department. Officials said Button’s leadership, experience, and dedication continue to play an important role in supporting the department and the Bolivar community.
