Massapequa Fire Department Conducts Ice Rescue Training at John Burns Park

Massapequa, NY - Volunteers from the Massapequa Fire Department, along with the Town of Oyster Bay Bay Constables, recently conducted a hands-on training exercise focused on both basic and advanced ice rescue techniques in the waters off John Burns Park.

The session provided responders with a valuable opportunity to practice real-world rescue scenarios under actual winter conditions an experience that only occurs a few times each season. Such training is essential for preparing firefighters to respond quickly and effectively in situations where individuals may fall through the ice.

Under careful supervision, firefighters practiced several techniques designed to safely remove victims from icy waters and transport them off the ice. Once rescued, the simulated “victims” were transferred to the care of EMS providers from Company Three. During this phase of the exercise, EMS personnel reviewed the proper criteria and procedures for treating patients suffering from hypothermia.

Training exercises like these help sharpen the skills of department members while strengthening teamwork and coordination among the three firehouses.

Officials also used the opportunity to remind the community that temperatures are gradually rising after a prolonged period of subfreezing weather. While ice is never completely safe, it becomes especially dangerous as warmer conditions cause it to weaken and melt. With many children off from school this week, residents are urged to follow safety warnings and stay off the ice.
