Central Square, NY — February 26th — Instructor Graves from the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services conducted a training class on lithium-ion battery emergencies at the Caughdenoy Volunteer Fire Department Inc. Caughdenoy members attended the class with firefighters from the Central Square Fire Company No. 1, West Monroe Volunteer Fire Department, Minetto Fire Department, and Moyers Corners Fire Department.
The seminar went over the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, which are used in household appliances, electric cars, and tools. Firefighters talked about how to identify battery fires, cooling and suppression techniques, and scene safety issues related to thermal runaway incidents. As battery-powered technology becomes more prevalent, departments throughout New York continue to increase training. During the evening session, representatives of Support Services also helped by serving refreshments.
