Callicoon, NY — March 7th — A training exercise on drafting water from a frozen source was carried out by members of the Callicoon Fire Department, Station 63. Firefighters were able to practice creating a dependable water supply over the winter, which is a common problem in rural locations where hydrants may be scarce. In order to draw water into the engine, crews cut through ice and install portable pumps, strainers, and hard-suction lines.
Additionally, firefighters discussed pump priming, ensuring a constant water flow, and coordinating with hose teams and pump operators. Officers reaffirmed safety protocols for using equipment in freezing weather and working on ice. For departments that safeguard rural areas, drafting from ponds, rivers, and other natural sources is still a crucial expertise.
