February 15, 2026 — Members of the Patterson Fire Department participated in a full day of specialized ice rescue training alongside neighboring departments to strengthen lifesaving skills used during winter emergencies.
While several firefighters from Patterson, Kent, Carmel and other departments attended Ice Rescue Technician certification training in Kent, additional members from Patterson and Brewster Fire Departments conducted refresher drills and introductory training for newer firefighters.
Ice rescue operations require specialized equipment and techniques that combine elements of rope rescue and water rescue while operating in extremely cold and hazardous conditions. Firefighters practiced using rescue sleds, tethered safety lines, and cold-water suits while maneuvering on frozen surfaces and simulating victim recovery scenarios.
With the region experiencing a particularly cold winter, responders had ideal conditions to train on frozen waterways. The hands-on exercises help ensure firefighters are prepared to safely rescue anyone who falls through the ice.
