DOWNS: An RV caught fire in Mansfield Twp., June 10th, knocking out power to traffic lights along Route 206, according to WPVI-TV. The fire spread through the vehicle, fueled by 100-gallons of diesel fuel and a 50-pound propane tank.
UPS: Recently promoted to the rank of fire captain at Monroe Township Fire District 3 were Robert Meyer and Michael Wesolowski, Jr. New firefighters are Mark Russo and Luke Fanning.
DOWNS: A man died after neighbors said he crashed his car into a home along Diston Ct. in Mount Laurel Twp., June 10th, according to WPVI-TV. It was reported that the man backed out of his driveway and crashed the car into the side of a garage of a home across the street. Neighbors said it looked like the car was backing at a high rate of speed and “blew up.” The home caught fire and it was destroyed. Four occupants escaped the flames.
UPS: In June, the Carlstadt Mayor and Council recognized ex-Chief John Ondrof for his 50-years of dedicated service to the Fire Department and the community.
DOWNS: Fire involved a recycling warehouse on South 9th St. in Millville, June 16th. Master streams were put to use to knocked down the flames.
UPS: In June, Teaneck firefighters responded to a call of a fawn stuck in a basement window well. Engine 22 members were able to safely remove it and release the fawn into the wild, according to a department Facebook post.
DOWNS: A jet fuel tanker overturned on the tarmac at Teterboro Airport, June 20th, that created a large scale emergency response from numerous Bergen County fire companies. Fire departments were requested by the Port Authority of NY & NJ to assist with water supply operations, according to the Hasbrouck Heights F.D. The tanker was leaking fuel after tipping onto its side, creating a potentially hazardous condition. This was a prolonged operation and units remained on the scene while the jet fuel could be offloaded and the tanker up righted, making the scene safe.
UPS: In June, Little Ferry Hose Co. 1 honored Firefighter Gary Riccio, Mike Nunziat and George Muller for their 50-years of service to the community.
DOWNS: Firefighters worked for hours, June 21st, to control a 4-alarm fire at a Vineland recycling center on North Mill Rd.
UPS: In June, 14 people were rescued after their 26-foot boat began taking on water in the Arthur Kill, according to the Daily Dispatch. Perth Amboy and Port Reading fire department boats responded and first responders found the vessel anchored off and beginning to flood. Marine crews transferred passengers to Perth Amboy Marine 5 and Port Reading Marine 2-3-8. All were taken to the Woodbridge Marina. Woodbridge fire units were at the marina to assist the rescued victims onto land. No injuries were reported.
DOWNS: Two parked vehicles burst into flames after a power line came crashing down along Lanza av. in Garfield, June 24th. Firefighter extinguished the fire on a 99 degree day, according to the Daily Voice.
UPS: On June 16th, North Arlington Firefighter Amanda Samels, of Eagle Truck Co. 3, was awarded the NJ State Council Knights of Columbus Fire Shield Award. The award is given to a firefighter for their exemplary service.
DOWNS: A conflagration displaced 77 people as fire raced through buildings on the 400 block of 21stStreet, Irvington, June 21st. The fire spread through a row of attached dwellings, and flames also jumped to dwelling across the street. The incident was on the Newark border, and that department dispatched a 2nd alarm assignment to the scene.
UPS: On the morning of June 28th, the Jersey City Fire Department conducted a high-rise drill utilizing a building under construction on Hudson St. The three-stage pumper assigned to Engine Co. 6 supplied water to over 50-stories. Visiting firemen from Miami were on hand to observe and bring back information to the MFD. The drill was the first of four such drills that will cover all four shifts. The city has over 200 high rise buildings with more under construction or on the drawing board.
