Legacy
What do you think a legacy is? You may think that it is donating a boat load of money to an organization or entity to have a building put up with your name on it.
A legacy may be soing something that may leave an impression on someone or some people that makes a difference and not even knowing it.
Proverbs states that "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children." It does not necessarily talk about finances. It could be the way that they children's chilldren behave because of values and thinking that have been passed down from generation to generation. It can be an occupation, a craft, a skill. How many businesses do you see that is "Name & Sons" or I know that is "Name & Daughters" and it is a family construction company. There may be some people who leave a legacy of educting people, and there are so many ways that we can teach people.
There are organizations that their founding members may have established as a standard for the organization. I know one organization, that because of five members, will never forget lessons from bowstring truss roofs. There are the legacy that is whispered because the story and information was passed after a great feat where someone should have or did die.
I know that most of us who do a job, with great concern for the people that we see, that we were given citations and medals is only part of the job. We do not look at anything that we do as a great accomplishment.
There are some of us who may not think of saving someone's life as spectacular and that's ok. There are people who just go on with their life and hopefully they instill that work ethic to the future generations.
I heard the story of a friend who survived a flashover and saw his gear after he survived. He keeps it so that he can teach the same lesson to so many people.
There are times where legacy becomes tradition. It could be on how equipment is stored or the items that we carry in our pocket. People may ask why and then they hear the story and hopefully understand.
I may not have much money. I have not done anything that I consider extraordinary. Right now, I am working on a project that I do not want credit for but I consider it to be a potential legacy, that being a project that will let people come and seek assistance and know that it will be done with love, honor and respect, no matter the other person's station in life. We all needed to be treated as a somebody and that goes from the addict, homeless to the millionaire. They should all be shown love because ever person who takes a breath deserves it. We are all created in God's image. I wish to leave a legacy of caring for people and having a tender heart for those who cannot fend for themselves. I want to hear the words "well done, good and faithful servant" but if I don't hear them and know that I have done my best, I will be content. If one person is better off because I have lived, I will consider that to be a gain.
What type of legacy do you want to leave? Will your legacy end with a flashy funeral? Or will you be happy with a humble passing and knowing that somewhere there are people who are better off because you lived?
How many people have you taken under your wing and mentored? Or who did you secretly take care of, without them knowing about it?
Fathers leave a legacy to this world and that is how they raised their children and the values instilled in them.
Stay safe,
