This book is soft cover, 8 ½ inches by 11 inches, with 138 pages. It is Volume 3-our heritage and our future. My regret is that I was unaware of the first two volumes, and by now they are sold out (which is good news for the author). He is a retired career lieutenant. My immediate impression while reading this book is that he, the author, is having “the time of his life” doing what he loves, which is writing about photographing Connecticut fire apparatus and the history behind them. The forward is by a friend of mine, Mark Redman, retired from the Bristol FD. Mark is a skilled artist, and on the inside cover has a magnificent drawing of a 1936 New Haven Seagrave tiller. Back then, their trucks had a deck gun behind the cab which in my opinion is common sense because where does the truck position at a fire? In front of the building! A good place for the deck gun to be. Another friend involved is Glenn Vincent, who wrote the forward of one of the previous volumes. Nevertheless, in the chapters each of the eight state counties is represented by photos of personnel and experiences and a multitude of magnificent color apparatus photos. A friend of mine who knows that author says that he aspired to photograph every apparatus in Connecticut, which is an ongoing task that is never complete because trucks are bought every year. With the help from many, the acknowledgements take up seven single spaced pages. Don’t forget to check out the special feature in the back of the book. Before this segment is a list of the Connecticut Firefighter Hall of Fame members. Take my word for it, if you have an interest in history and fire apparatus, this is a book you will want in your collection. Order it before it sells out like the other volumes!
