Recruits at the Reading Fire Academy were instructed in techniques to survive hostile fire events during structural fires. After reviewing several case-studies the students completed several skills to build confidence in themselves and their equipment. A large portion of the program is focused on SCBA use. Having in-depth knowledge of breathing apparatus is critical for firefighters. Additional emphasis is placed on the ability to declare a "MAYDAY" during a fire. The remainder of the programs covers rapid escape from burning buildings.
