Elections are just around the corner in my dept. We have ran into alittle bit of problem with our by-laws and what they state about being able to run for a line officer position. Here is the problem. We had a member that served in our dept about six years ago never held a position in the few years he was there now 6 years later be moved back. He has alot of experience but has not worked with majority of the dept man power due to alot of new members. He put in for first capt and to top it off he is still on dept probation. Anyone with any idea on how or what their department handles this issue would be greatly appriciated.

I would think that your first step would be to submitt a bylaw change. Second i would tell you not to worry about him running for office as your membership should be wise enough to relize if they have not been on a lot of calls with him. That is were trust is built between firefighters and officers.
